Winemaking

Handpicked fruit was destemmed and carefully fermented in small lots and gently pressed at dryness. The wine was aged eighteen months in mixed French cooperage before being blended and bottled.

Vineyard Sites

57% - Cockburn Vineyard
Walla Walla Valley, Columbia Valley

Cockburn Vineyard is a 52 acre vineyard in well drained, deep, silty-loam in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. The vineyard row orientation is east-west and the layout is 9x4 feet. The vineyard is planted at 1,250 to 1,300 feet of elevation and was planted in 2010. The high elevation of this site leads to wines with great structure and intensity.

29 % - High River Vineyard
Columbia Valley

High River Vineyard is perched at 750 ft on the eastern side of the Columbia River, north of Walla Walla, Washington. The deep, sandy loam soils allow for perfect drainage and the proximity to the Columbia River provides a strong diurnal temperature shift. Warm days and cool evenings ripen the fruit steadily and the extended growing season provide sufficient hang time for flavors to develop. We picked the fruit in October at optimal ripeness.

14% - Winesap Vineyard
The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater, Walla Walla Valley, Columbia Valley

Winesap Vineyard is a 12 acre vineyard planted in the rocky floodplain of the Walla Walla River in The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater. Its elevation is 850ft, and its row orientation is east-west with spacing 8x3 feet. The sparse, rocky soils produce wines that are savory, elegant, and restrained.

Vintage Notes

2020 began with a cool, wet spring. Budbreak was tracking in a normal pattern, while rain during bloom caused yields to be lower than normal - focusing concentration of berry and flavor development. A cooler than normal July and August helped the fruit ripen steadily and we harvested these vineyards in late September through mid-October. The 2020 wines are marked by concentrated fruit flavors, richness, and intensity.
